About Tammy

I’m Tammy, and I am a K-6 grade tutor with a passion for helping struggling learners and students with dyslexia.

When I first started teaching, I saw so many students that needed extra help. Despite my training, I felt like Arnold Schwarzenegger in the movie Kindergarten Cop; students were running around me, I wasn’t sure what to do, and I didn’t know the best way to help them.

Thankfully, since then, I have added many useful tools to my teaching toolbox. I believe that with the right tools, all kids can learn, reach their goals, and have fun doing it.

I am ready to share these important tools with you!

Expert Training

I have a degree in early childhood education and I also have specialized training in tutoring children with learning disabilities, ADHD, and dyslexia (including Orton-Gillingham methods). I also created publications for the U. S. Department of Education on literacy. Plus, I have 20 years of experience tutoring children from preschool to 8th grade.

Passion & Commitment

I am motivated to help struggling readers with decoding, phonics, fluency, comprehension, and writing. I love creating educational resources and activities that are engaging, meaningful, multi-sensory, and fun. I am currently living my dream job – I get to play games and make crafts while helping young learners!

My students love hands-on activities, and their enthusiasm inspires me to create new and fun learning experiences. I enjoy watching their little faces light up when they realize they learned something AND beat their tutor in a game, too.

New Projects

I have always loved children’s literature and dreamed of writing a book of my own. To make that dream come true, I created a character based on my real four-legged friend, Dusty, to help inspire young learners.

Through his own struggles and experiences, Dusty encourages children to ask for help when they need it, try and try again to discover how they learn best, and develop a positive mindset.

My first book, Did You Say Pasghetti? Dusty and Danny Tackle Dyslexia was published in March of 2020. I currently keeping busy writing other Dusty the Dog activities and books – so be on the lookout for more fun resources coming soon!

Family Business

I am also a wife and mom to adult children who have struggled with dyslexia, autism, intellectual disabilities, and emotional issues. That’s why helping others overcome learning challenges is so important to me as a parent and a teacher. With my unique perspective and years of experience, I can help others navigate the twists and turns that come with raising and teaching exceptional learners.

Personal Interests

In my free time, you can find me exploring all kinds of historical sites, museums, and parks in the Northern Virginia area with my family. I am a lifelong learner who loves reading, crafting, photography, scrapbooking, and taking walks. I have two adorable dogs that are my constant companions, and wherever I go.
