Classroom Library Organization Tips

There is no right or wrong way to organize your library.  Decide what you feel works best for your group of students.

  1. Classify your books by genre. This will help your students find the type of book they’re looking for more quickly.
  2. Arrange your books alphabetically by author’s last name. This will make it easier for your students to find the book they want when they’re looking for a particular author.
  3. Put similar books together. For example, you could put all of your books about animals in one section, or all of your books about history in another section.
  4. Label each section with a sign or a sticker. This will help your students know where to find the type of book they’re looking for.
  5. Keep an up-to-date list of all the books in your library. This will help you keep track of what you have, and it will also be a valuable resource for your students. Check out this really cool site: LibraryThing.
  6. Find the best book bins for your space. They should be able to fit a variety of sizes and fit nicely into your space. Book bins keep the books organized and neat looking.  Some places to look are dollar stores, Walmart, Target, Teaching Supply Stores, Oriental Trading Company, Lakeshore Learning, and Really Good Stuff.

Teaching Tip

Don’t forget a book hospital.  Because accidents happen, this is a place where books that have been damaged can be put for a little loving care.

How can these tips help my students learn?

Second, organizing the books by genre, author, or subject will help your students see the relationships between different types of books. This can deepen their understanding of the topics they’re interested in and broaden their knowledge of other subjects.

Finally, an up-to-date list of all the books in your library will be a valuable resource for your students as they research topics or look for recommended reads.
